Conserving Energy

Where do we see that the Torah is concerned with energy conservation?

I think that the torah tells us to conserve energy not only on Shabbat, but also during the week. This is because god gave us the world, and we shouldn't pollute it because we can't conserve energy.

Well i have thought about this for a few minutes and i have come up with an answer. On Shabbat we are not allowed to use electronics or anything that uses ENERGY. On Shabbat we read the TORAH.. By reading the Torah we are conserving energy!!

Anonymous said...

i think it is good. this way we won't waste energy and more people can get it

Jacob Singer said...

On the holiday of Chanukah we tried to preserve the oil to last more than one night.

the oral torah does speak about preserving energy

Lauren said...

The torah teaches us to conserve energy by not allowing us to use electronics on shabbat.

Jacob Singer said...

I believe that torah is doing the right thing and i am going to try to preserve energy.

the oral torah speaks about preserving energy whenever it talks about keeping shabbat, or how G-d created the world

Jacob Singer said...

Yes it does.

By not using it on Shabbat

I think the torah tells us to conserve energy on SHABBAT!!! it is the seventh day of creation where God rested and didnt create anything but resting and shabbat.

The Torah says to conserve energy by not using electricity on Shabbos-though we may have to leave some lights on for necessity, during the week our lights would be on in our rooms, the TV and/or the computer would be running, and we would be cooking. This is much more energy than just leaving some lights on in certain rooms for 25 hours. Also we don't drive.

I think that we shouldn't waste energy. i think we should use energy in moderation

Not just mechanical energy but also energy for your body. That is why we rest on Shabbat.

Julie said...

IIIIIII found all this on wikipedia!!! so ya. You are supposed to conserve energy by not using it on Shabbat.

I think the Jews are really the people that take greater steps to conserving energy, but we are fulfilling a mitzvah in the process. its like killing two birds with one stone. YAY JEWS!

The torah teaches us to preserve energy by teaching us not to waste like on Shabbat. As a nation we see that we made an effort to preserve energy when G-d led us on a direct route to Israel from Egypt (however we were bad and he made us wonder for 40 years). I think the Torah is right about perserving torah b/c if we waste we will become greedy.

carmelle said...

we as a nation conserve energy on shabbat!!!!!! becasue that is the day that hashem rested we also conserve energy on the high holidays that are religious holidays and dont use energy

Hallie said...

I think God wants us to conserve energy because he made the earth and we should preserve it. Also because he rested on shabbat.

G-D created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. We are instructed to rest too and not use electricity. Because electricity uses power which has to be fueled which requires work. This also conserves energy which means the world might not be as polluted and the ozone layer will last longer which means G-D's world will live for alonger time. All his hard work will stay intact and the world can go on.

carmelle said...

I think Hashem did a good job on leaving a day of rest and to pray to God and to praise him. However, to some unreligious jews chose not to and treat shabbat as an ordinary day.

Julia Emma said...

We save our phyisical energy by resting on Shabbat. Hashem showed us that we need to conserve energy and our bodies on the Shabbat because every other day of the week we work so hard. This is the chapter of Beresheit.

Where in Jewish history we as a nation made an effort to conserve energy: Maybe when Jerusalem was under siege we had to conserve energy and food-we couldn't burn all our wood or we wouldn't have any forthe next day-it may be due to rationing but we still conserved energy as a nation

Sarah Q said...

on shabbat we are supposed to not use electricty
but i dont understand. . . when the law was formed (i know g-d knows) but it was meant to be a day of rest not necessarily not to use electricity the rabbis added that little bit of regulations. . . so think about that!!!!

We conserve energy on shabbat! I think it is good that we preserve energy because God made the world and we should take care of it. Yes the torah shebaal Peh speaks about it. It talks about it when it talks about shabbat. This is all from wikiedia

I think the torah believes in conserving energy when it introduces the theory of Shabbat. It wants us to rest and be ready for the next week.
Also the torah states that during holidays we should also rest but we are able to cook and carry (both are melachot that aren't allowed on SHabbat). Before Matan Torah the Jews Used three days to rest which shows us that as a nation we preserved energy. I personally think this is very important and that everyone should take a day off during the week to re-vamp themselves. The torah she be al Peh talks about preserving energy in hilchot Shabbos. It states that you are not allowed to commit any of the 39 Avot Melachot and their subcatagories. I agree with most of the laws stated in the Torah She be al pe because it gives reason that i like for it's laws.

Okay, so the TORAH says not to use any electricity junk on Shabbat. But the thing is, nowadays since you aren't allowed to turn things on and off on shabbat, people just leave their lights on for the whole time. That is NOT conserving energy! Here's a website proving this....it's interesting look at it:
http://ohr.edu/ask_db/ask_main.php/166/Q1/

Even though this is not in the Torah, in the story of Chanukah the Jews used one day's worth of oil to last 8 days. THAT'S CONSERVING ENERGY!
There are also many synagogues that are hosting events having to do with conserving energy on the holidays. This proves that we are doing this now a days.
http://www.coejl.org/programbank/displayprog.php?id=136

That's it for right now.

Baal Tashchis - which means that a person should not let things go to waste
so there forwasting energy is bad!!!!

Sarah Q said...

by the way i found that from ask moses!!!

Jews worried about saving energy for foreign affairs. Also the Jews wanted to save oil for cooking and for lighting. The Jews Also didn't use light on Shabbes so that's one day less of fossil fuels.

sarah d said...

because g-d created the world i think that he would want us to save it from destruction if we are able to

during chanukah when we saved the oil for eight days shows us that we saved oil

The torah talks about energy conservation when it talks about the smitah year but the one thing i hate that rabbi's think that because it says there is going to be a hole in the ozone that they dont have to worry about our world. The oral torah talks about conserving energy when it talks about what you cant do on shabbos.

I think that the Torah does tell us to conserve energy like on sabbath. We are not suppose to use energy we have to let the world be. This is the same with the resting on the seventh year. We have to let nature and g-d do everything for us. So once a week and once every Seven years we do not us any energy.

how does the torah teach us to preserve energy? when it says not to work on shabbat which we've made into not using energy on shabbat. source: general knowledge
where do we see in Jewish History that we as a nation and/or country made an effort to preserve energy? when we used the oil on chanukah.
i think that preserving energy is a good thing.
does the torah shebaal peh speak about energy conservation? yes.
where or how? in Zeraim in shivi'it
i think letting things rest ans re-energize themselves is smart because it works better, longer.

the link talks about the purpose of all of gods creations such as trees and to appreciate them.

it then continues:
"The Talmud also says that if you have taken water from a well, it is forbidden to throw out the remaining water but one should find some way to recycle it."

therefor we must recycle all that we use and may not waste.
